ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood appeared on “Mornings with Maria” to discuss her fund’s increased investment in SpaceX and defense firms, the disruptive potential of AI across corporations, the intensifying technology competition with China, and her optimistic perspective on the U.S. economy.
Wood reaffirmed her confidence in SpaceX’s long-term vision, calling it a company capable of reshaping humanity’s trajectory despite its recent 47% stock decline and the $116 billion liquidity event tied to its IPO. The ARK Invest portfolio added $80 million to SpaceX holdings following its public launch.
Appearing on the show Wednesday, Wood emphasized that SpaceX’s current valuation dips below its peak but remains significant compared to its IPO floor. “While its market cap has dropped, its historical significance could be unparalleled,” she stated. “This company isn’t just about rockets—it’s about building infrastructure for interplanetary colonization and revolutionizing global telecommunications.”

As of Wednesday’s pre-market, SpaceX stock traded at $123.50 per share, down sharply from its $225 high. Barron’s reports the firm has lost nearly $1.4 trillion in market value, now ranking eighth by size after Meta overtook it. Wood highlighted SpaceX’s dual focus: enabling humanity’s expansion into space through reusable launch systems and creating a terrestrial internet network via Starlink—a sector previously dominated by regional telecom monopolies.

A prominent skeptic argues that investors betting against SpaceX face existential risks, citing the company’s disruptive innovation pipeline. “Short-term volatility doesn’t negate the 50-year horizon where this becomes a cornerstone of human advancement,” Wood noted, referencing Elon Musk’s vertical integration of ventures like Tesla, xAI, and Neuralink.
Musk himself recently cautioned against short-selling SpaceX on X, asserting that companies maintaining bearish positions risk insolvency over time. He framed the firm’s mission as “fundamental to humanity’s multiplanetary future,” despite regulatory and financial headwinds.
