Among the various 130mm f/5 reflectors offered by Celestron, the DX 130AZ stands out as one of two StarSense Explorer variants, the other being a tabletop Dobsonian. While it utilizes an alt-azimuth tripod mount and a 2-inch focuser, the core optical design remains consistent with its counterparts.
Within the StarSense Explorer lineup, the DX 130AZ represents a superior tier of performance. While Celestron offers several capable Dobsonians, a pair of Schmidt-Cassegrains, the DX 102 refractor, a 114mm Bird-Jones model, and smaller refractors, the DX 130AZ delivers a notably higher level of observational capability.
Although the DX 130AZ sits on the smaller end of “serious” instruments, it possesses ample aperture to reveal numerous deep-sky objects and stunning lunar and planetary detail, even under moderately light-polluted skies.
Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ: Design
The DX 130 rides on the same alt-azimuth mount/tripod shared with the other StarSense Explorer DX models. It is reasonably sturdy, with one significant limitation: the tube cannot point straight up. When aimed above approximately 70 to 75 degrees, the tube collides with the mount or the tripod legs. A simple workaround exists: deliberately leveling the tripod unevenly allows the scope to reach the zenith without disrupting the mount or the StarSense system. While visually unconventional, this method is effective. The tripod remains stable in calm conditions; however, loading the accessory tray with sandbags or filling the hollow aluminum legs with sand or foam significantly enhances stability.
The mount features slow-motion controls with small gears for fine adjustments. Though they exhibit slight play, the impact is minimal given the telescope’s practical magnification limit of around 200x. In practice, the slow-motion controls are rarely utilized, as manual nudging proves sufficient. For aiming, a red dot finder is provided alongside the StarSense Explorer technology.
The included kit provides two three-element eyepieces: a 25mm (26x) and a 10mm (65x). Likely Konig or reversed Kellner designs, they perform acceptably. The 25mm exhibits slight edge softness, and the 10mm displays minor chromatic aberration at the edges, but both remain reasonably sharp. The primary drawback is the all-plastic housings, which generate noticeable internal reflections.
Investing in superior aftermarket eyepieces is highly recommended to enhance performance and magnification range. A 6mm eyepiece (yielding 108x), a 2x Barlow lens, and a high-quality wide-field option like the 24mm APM/StellaLyra UFF (27x) would be ideal additions. The 6mm provides closer magnification than the stock 10mm with a sharper view, while the 24mm UFF offers significantly crisper imagery than the stock 25mm. Combining a Barlow with the 6mm allows magnifications up to 216x on the Moon, planets, and double stars—approaching the maximum capability of this telescope. Alternatively, observers can select their own eyepiece configurations.

The focuser accommodates both the supplied 1.25” eyepieces and aftermarket wide-field 2-inch eyepieces; however, at f/5, a coma corrector is essential for the latter, which adds considerable cost. As a Newtonian reflector, the DX 130 requires regular collimation for sharp images. Celestron omits a collimation tool, which is slightly frustrating, though a basic collimation cap is inexpensive, easily 3D-printable, or can be improvised from a film canister. Overall, the DX 130 is lightweight and highly portable—a significant strength. It is effortless to transport, and the StarSense Explorer app handles plate-solving with ease, even if the scope must be carried around the yard to bypass obstructions.
Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ: Performance
The DX 130 delivers exceptional detail on the lunar surface, resolving features spanning just a few kilometers with genuine sharpness. While the focuser is somewhat coarse, careful manipulation allows it to reach focus even at high magnifications. The 130mm f/5 optics can tolerate up to approximately 250x magnification under steady atmospheric conditions, though the best views of the Moon and planets typically occur between 150x and 220x, as the mount begins to wobble at the upper limits of this range.
When observing the planets, the DX 130 effortlessly captures shadow transits of Jupiter’s moons, renders all four Galilean moons as distinct disks, and reveals the Great Red Spot. Saturn’s rings are prominently displayed, accompanied by roughly half a dozen moons, and the Cassini Division becomes visible when the rings are tilted more openly than their current orientation. Uranus appears as a diminutive greenish disk, though its moons remain unresolved. Distinguishing Neptune from a star is challenging, but the StarSense Explorer app aids in identifying this blue dot amidst similar 8th-magnitude points.
A practical consideration: maintaining a dim, red phone screen is essential when using the StarSense Explorer app. While the app features a red mode, notifications or the phone reverting to the lock screen can cause bright flashes, severely impacting dark adaptation even at minimum brightness. However, this is easily managed by fully dimming the screen and utilizing a proper red filter, whether software-based or physical.
Regarding deep-sky objects, the spiral arms of the Andromeda Galaxy and M33 appear magnificent under dark skies, though only their cores are visible under light pollution. Globular clusters like M13 and M3 begin to resolve, while more demanding targets like M53 are difficult from Bortle 5 skies but feasible from Bortle 2 conditions. Under bright skies, open clusters such as M11, M35, and the Pleiades serve as the primary deep-sky attractions; under dark skies, fainter nebulae and galaxies shine brilliantly, and the strands of dark nebulae and galactic cirrus emerge around open clusters.
The brightest planetary nebulae become resolvable with the DX 130 regardless of sky conditions. While most observers will not discern much color due to the scope’s relatively small aperture—though some may detect a bluish-green tint in objects like the Ring Nebula and the Cat’s Eye Nebula—these objects remain reasonably easy to observe even from light-polluted areas, particularly when using an aftermarket nebula filter.
Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ: Functionality
By design, the StarSense Explorer DX 130 is a wide-field telescope, and its appeal lies in not strictly requiring computerized pointing aids. The StarSense Explorer system is entirely optional; users can aim the telescope manually, with or without their phone docked, just like any traditional manual scope. Setup is remarkably quick: assemble the tripod and mount, attach the tube and an eyepiece, dock your phone, run the app’s alignment routine, and you are ready to observe. The StarSense Explorer is significantly easier to initiate than a GoTo telescope, and its use is not mandatory. For a quick glance at the Moon or Jupiter, there is no need to engage the phone dock and app. With experience, users may find they no longer require the StarSense Explorer technology, particularly given the telescope’s wide field of view, which generously forgives manual pointing errors.
Should you buy the Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ?
Buy it if:
You need a portable, tripod-mounted wide-field telescope.
You want phone-guided pointing but also the option to aim manually.
You frequently observe from sites with trees or obstructed horizons.
Don’t buy it if:
You want the most aperture and stability for your money.
You want motorized pointing and tracking capabilities.
You want to observe close-up details in galaxies and globular star clusters.
In terms of value, the price of the DX 130 could secure a 6-inch or even an 8-inch Dobsonian for those satisfied with a fully manual scope. The DX 130 is more portable than a full-size 6- or 8-inch Dobsonian and offers a considerably wider field of view with any given eyepiece; however, if observing from a site without a fairly dark sky, this advantage is somewhat diminished compared to those larger-aperture telescopes, which perform significantly better on targets less affected by light pollution.
A reflector of this caliber provides vastly superior views compared to the cheap refractors in this price bracket and offers a much wider possible field of view than catadioptrics. The StarSense Explorer DX 102, effectively this scope’s sister model, suffers from excessive chromatic aberration, failing to deliver sharp high-power images and gathering less light than the 130. The StarSense Explorer 5-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain is optically decent and is slightly more forgiving of inexpensive eyepieces due to its longer focal ratio, but it is no better for planetary work than the DX 130 with proper eyepieces, cannot deliver a wide deep-sky field of view, and gathers slightly less light overall.
Overall, the DX 130 would not be the author’s top recommendation, but it is certainly among the top 10 in its price range. If you have already decided this is the type of telescope you desire, it is a perfectly sound choice; however, consider Dobsonians first if you prefer a manual telescope, or a fully automatic GoTo instrument if you want a more high-tech solution.

For improved performance
Celestron StarSense Explorer 8-inch
A 6-inch f/8 Dobsonian like the Apertura AD6 or Sky-Watcher 6-inch Classic, or an 8-inch model like Celestron’s own StarSense Explorer 8-inch, is significantly sturdier than the DX 130 or a tabletop scope/tripod setup and offers easier collimation alongside higher performance with inexpensive eyepieces. However, they are considerably bulkier and heavier.
For portability and ease of use
If you want fully computerized pointing, Celestron’s Astro Fi 130 offers identical specifications to the StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ but with full GoTo and tracking operated via your smartphone (and can be aimed straight up). However, setup is much more time-consuming, as you cannot simply place the telescope down and go.
