Celtic Aim to Extend Dominance Over Aberdeen in Midweek Premiership Clash

At the start of the campaign, there would have been little doubt about Martin O’Neill’s position at Celtic following his success in delivering a league and cup double during a turbulent season in his second spell as the club’s interim manager.

However, the experienced Northern Irishman missed last month’s victory over Kilmarnock after undergoing a minor medical procedure in hospital, and he later endured a 5-1 defeat against LASK that ended Celtic’s hopes of Champions League qualification once again.

Saturday’s subsequent 2-1 home win over Falkirk was far from convincing, adding to concerns among supporters regarding the club’s summer transfer activity. Assistant Shaun Maloney was sent out to address the media in his place on Tuesday.

Despite these challenges, Celtic have emerged victorious in all five of their matches aside from that loss in Austria, entering Wednesday’s fixture against Aberdeen two points clear at the top of the table.

Similarly, Aberdeen counterpart Stephen Robinson faces lingering doubts from sections of the Dons support, even though he guided the club away from relegation trouble last season and has begun the current campaign with six wins and only two defeats.

Compounding his challenge, Sunday’s home defeat by Rangers has done little to raise expectations for the trip to Celtic Park, where Aberdeen have failed to win in 14 previous visits.

Indeed, Celtic claimed victory in all three meetings between the sides last season, while Aberdeen — who have not won in 15 away league matches — edged the 2025 Scottish Cup final on penalties.
