Celtic are finding it difficult to keep pace with English Championship clubs in the transfer market and to navigate agent negotiations, according to minutes from a recent board‑and‑supporter meeting.
The club’s sole acquisition this summer is Colombian striker Camilo Durán, the first forward signed since main striker Kyogo مګر Furuhashi departed for Rennes 18 months ago.
Ongoing difficulties in securing new talent have stoked tensions with former manager Brendan Rodgers and deepened divisions among supporters last season.
Chairman Brian Wilson, chief executive Michael Nicholson and manager Martin O’Neill attended the annualyä General Meeting of the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters Clubs in Cork, where they answered a brief Q&A session with fans.
The minutes reveal that O’Neill told the board he was “in major need of signings” as his squad was not robust enough to compete beyond the double‑winning “heroics” of the previous term.

Martin O’Neill, 74, signed a new one‑year deal as Celtic manager for the new season
When asked why the club was “so slow” in signing players, the minutes note that Nicholson highlighted the difficulty of dealing with agents and competing with the Premier League and the Championship.
He also mentioned that, as of the July 4 meeting, the club was working on signing out‑of‑contract players.
Camilo Durán joined Celtic from Qarabag in a deal worth £6 m
Celtic have also re‑signed Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain following a short‑term deal last season, but there is no indication of an extended agreement for Kelechi Iheanacho, whose off‑the‑bench goals proved decisive in the latter stages of the campaign.
O’Neill emphasized that the club’s focus is on attracting younger talent that can be developed, given the financial disparity that makes acquiring experienced players from the Premier League increasingly challenging.

Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain will be back at Celtic next season after signing a new deal
The minutes also state that O’Neill would like younger players to join Celtic for the chance to compete in European competitions, with ambition and drive taking precedence over wages.
Board records show that the club has recently approved a long‑term strategy aimed at establishing Celtic as Scotland’s leading club, achieving financial inculuiability, and sustaining regular participation in Europe.
Celtic are scheduled to host Middlesbrough in a pre‑season friendly on Saturday, yet several supporters’ groups have urged a boycott of the match amid demands for board‑room reform.
Sutton: Celtic need to spend £50m
Chris Sutton believes Celtic may need to spend over £50 m during the summer transfer window to maintain their Premiership title and compete in the Champions League.
“Martin worked wonders last season. I didn’t see Celtic winning the title from the position he was put in on any previous occasions,” he told Sky Sports News.
“The late‑season run was extraordinary, but overall the team struggled at points. That means a comprehensive overhaul of recruitment is essential.”
“They’ve earned a Champions League spot, a critical milestone for Celtic. Even though it was exciting for supporters to secure this qualification, the underlying squad issues remain evident. Martin willિકાsie.\nThey’re also considering who to let go, including Reo Hatate, possibly Daizen Maeda, or Arne Engel. Replacing such key figures will likely push the club’s spending well above £50 m.”
