Celtic Recruit Loan Keeper Johnstone Alongside Chelsea Prospects Mheuka and Emenalo

The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who earned his fourth and final England cap in 2023, featured 17 times last season for relegated Wolves. However, he lost his starting spot in December and has remained on the sidelines since an early March FA Cup defeat to Liverpool.

“I’m buzzing to be here and I’m excited to get going,” said the goalkeeper, who began his career at Manchester United and had spells at Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace.

“I didn’t need convincing from anyone, but Joe Hart recently called me to emphasize just what a special club this is, the quality of the squad, and how incredible the supporters are,” he added.

“You hear about the size of the club, but being here for just a day makes you realize exactly how big it truly is. And I thrive under pressure—the desire to win, to perform at the highest level, and to lift trophies is exactly what I am here for.”

Schmeichel had served as Celtic’s first-choice keeper since the summer of 2024 but retired in February following a shoulder injury after playing his final match earlier in the month.

Manager Martin O’Neill described the signing as a “valuable addition” and praised Mheuka’s “exceptional quality”.

The manager also praised new left-back Emenalo, stating he possesses “numerous attributes that I believe will benefit the team.” O’Neill added that the teenager is “quick on the ball, capable defensively, and contributes effectively to attacking positions.”
