Celtic have signed Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, whose standout performance against Argentina propelled Egypt to the brink of eliminating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a memorable World Cup match.
The 24‑year‑old, who is left‑footed but frequently operates on the right flank, has signed a four‑year contract with an optional extra year.
Hassan featured for just 126 minutes at the World Cup after a registration delay kept him out of the group stage, but his appearance boosted his profile.
He entered as a second‑half substitute during Egypt’s last‑32 penalty‑shootout victory over Australia and then dazzled against Argentina, though the Pharaohs were denied a historic win amid controversy.
The Paris‑born forward has spent two seasons with Real Oviedo, having previously cycled through three other Spanish clubs after leaving his youth club Chateauroux in 2020.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill emphasized a focus on quality over quantity while rebuilding a squad that lost over a dozen players since last season’s Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
Hassan is Celtic’s third summer signing ahead of a crucial Champions League play‑off against LASK scheduled for next Wednesday.
Danish striker Kasper Hogh joined from Bodo/Glimt for a reported £11 million, while Colombian forward Camilo Duran arrived from Qarabag for an undisclosed fee.
“It’s a great moment and a real honour for me to join Celtic,” Hassan said in a club media interview.
“When I heard Celtic were interested in me, I just had to come here and be part of the club,” he added.
O’Neill continued, “The club has done really well to secure a player of such quality, as several other clubs were also interested in him.”
“He is someone who I think has the ability and experience to do very well for us, performing at a high level in both domestic and international football.”
“I know he’s excited about being with us, and I’m sure our fans will enjoy the energy and attacking intent Haissem will bring to matches.”
