WWE superstar Chad Gable has recently shared his true intentions behind his unique “El Grande Americano” character.
During an appearance on the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast, Gable revealed that he never envisioned his alter ego as a comedic caricature. Although many fans and observers initially perceived the character as a parody of Mexican luchadores, Gable maintained a completely different perspective from the start.
“From the beginning, it was always meant to be taken seriously. I never wanted it to be a joke, and I don’t think any of us did,” Gable explained. He believes that while the audience might have initially expected a comedy gimmick, his approach was entirely different.
“I never did. With total transparency, to me, it was going to be dead serious. It was a way to disrespect the culture, to insult my luchador coworkers, and make this a real, personal story,” Gable added.
The concept of El Grande Americano originated after Gable suffered a defeat against Penta in his WWE debut, prompting him to embark on a journey to master the art of lucha libre. Upon his return to the ring, Gable began portraying both his regular persona and the El Grande Americano character. However, after Gable sustained an injury, his partner Ludwig Kaiser stepped in, fully embracing the gimmick and elevating it to new heights.
The intense rivalry surrounding El Grande Americano ultimately culminated at the Noche de Los Grandes 2026 event, where Ludwig Kaiser’s version of the character defeated Gable’s, leading to a dramatic unmasking.
