BBC correspondent Nick Beake surveyed a scene of total destruction in Bédar, a village in Spain’s Almería province, where homes have been reduced to ash amid what locals describe as “a sea of black.”
The inferno tore through the region on Thursday, prompting a massive response from hundreds of firefighters. The blaze has claimed at least 12 lives, according to official reports.
Local authorities estimate the fire has consumed approximately 6,600 hectares (16,300 acres) of land.
The disaster unfolds against the backdrop of a sustained heatwave pushing temperatures toward 40°C (104°F), fueling wildfire outbreaks across Southern Europe, with France, Portugal, and Spain all battling significant blazes this summer.
