Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the situation regarding Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, who has also emerged as a primary target for Real Madrid.

While it has already been reported that Madrid are keen on the Italian international, Calafiori remains a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s defensive lineup. Consequently, any potential move could command a fee as high as €100m.

According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea maintain a longstanding interest in the defender. This pursuit dates back to Calafiori’s tenure at Bologna, during which the Blues attempted to secure his signature even as negotiations with the Gunners were progressing.

Given their current defensive needs, Calafiori would represent a significant upgrade for Chelsea, offering versatility and quality at both center-back and left-back positions.

The 24-year-old has impressed during his time in North London, although sporadic fitness concerns have occasionally limited his availability. In theory, these inconsistencies might leave the door open for a deal if a sufficiently tempting offer is presented.

Arsenal Likely to Resist Sale to Premier League Rivals

Despite the interest, it is highly unlikely that Arsenal would be willing to facilitate a move to a direct rival like Chelsea. Calafiori possesses the potential to be a transformative asset for the Blues’ rebuilding project should he maintain his fitness and continue his trajectory.

While the Gunners currently boast a more cohesive squad than their West London neighbors, a player of Calafiori’s caliber could significantly accelerate Chelsea’s return to the top of the table.

From a strategic standpoint, selling to Real Madrid would be the far more palatable option for Arsenal, though there is currently no indication that such a move is imminent.

Simon Phillips has further clarified that there are no signs of Calafiori being unhappy at the Emirates or actively seeking a departure. Therefore, while the interest from elite clubs is logical, any actual transfer remains a distant possibility.
