Chelsea are reportedly ready to make Frenkie de Jong one of their top earners if they can persuade Barcelona to sell the Dutch midfielder in January.
The Blues’ interest in De Jong, which has surfaced previously, now appears to be intensifying.
At 29, De Jong would represent a different kind of signing for Chelsea: an experienced, proven midfielder rather than a player acquired mainly for future potential.
The main challenge lies in convincing Barcelona to release a player who remains a key figure for Hansi Flick.
Chelsea willing to offer De Jong a ‘hefty’ contract
According to Football Insider, Chelsea are set to propose a substantial salary package to De Jong should an agreement with Barcelona be reached.
De Jong signed a new contract with Barcelona last year, extending his stay until 2029, which means the Spanish club faces no contractual pressure to sell.
Nevertheless, Chelsea continue to monitor his situation as they aim to bolster their midfield with additional experience and control.
His ability to receive the ball under pressure, progress through midfield and dictate the tempo continues to make him an attractive target for the London club.
De Jong could bring stability to Xabi Alonso’s midfield
There is a strong argument that De Jong would be a valuable addition.
While Chelsea have invested heavily in younger midfielders, an experienced player who has competed for major trophies and amassed hundreds of appearances for Barcelona could add a new dimension to the squad.
Flick remains a major admirer. After a Barcelona victory earlier this year, the German remarked, “De Jong is very important… he still played a great game.” The comments were published on Barcelona’s official website.
That praise also underscores Chelsea’s biggest obstacle: Barcelona still place a high value on him.
Consequently, a January transfer appears difficult rather than impossible. Chelsea may be prepared to make a substantial financial offer, but personal terms represent only one part of the equation.
Should Barcelona eventually become open to negotiations, De Jong would provide Chelsea with proven quality at an age when he should still have several strong seasons ahead of him.
