Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have named former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as their new assistant coach ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Batty joins the five-time champions following a highly successful tenure with Surrey, where he led the county side to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024.

In his new role, Batty will work alongside head coach Zaheer Khan, who has taken charge of CSK’s coaching setup after Stephen Fleming’s long-standing association with the franchise came to an end. These strategic appointments signal a major reshuffle in the team’s backroom staff as Chennai gear up for the next IPL campaign.

Who Is Gareth Batty?

Born on October 13, 1977, in Bradford, England, Gareth Jon Batty is a former professional cricketer who played international cricket for England. A right-arm off-spinner and right-handed batter, he carved out a distinguished career in English domestic cricket, most notably with Surrey.

Batty started his professional journey with Yorkshire before turning out for both Worcestershire and Surrey. He also captained Surrey from 2015 to 2017, cementing his reputation as a seasoned leader in county cricket. Across his career, he featured in over 700 professional matches and took more than 1,000 wickets in various formats.

International Career and Key Achievements

Batty represented England in nine Test matches, 10 One-Day Internationals, and one T20 International. His international career, spanning from 2002 to 2016, included a remarkable return to the Test squad at the age of 39 during England’s tours of Bangladesh and India in 2016.

Despite limited chances on the international stage, Batty thrived in domestic cricket. He claimed 682 wickets in first-class cricket and emerged as one of Surrey’s most reliable performers across formats. His sustained excellence and durability made him a defining figure in English county cricket.

Transition into Coaching

After hanging up his boots in 2021, Batty transitioned into coaching at Surrey, starting as an assistant before assuming the role of head coach in 2022.

His leadership proved transformative. Under his guidance, Surrey secured the County Championship consecutively in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and were runners-up in 2025—a period that underscored his tactical acumen and motivational prowess.

CSK will be pinning hopes on their revamped coaching team to deliver a stronger performance in IPL 2027. Since lifting the title in 2023, the franchise has endured a challenging phase, failing to qualify for the playoffs in each of the subsequent three seasons.
