Chennai Super Kings Hand Reins to Zaheer Khan as Head Coach for IPL 2027

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have overhauled their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, aiming to rebuild after a challenging previous campaign. The franchise has secured a former Indian international with vast IPL experience to lead the team, following the exit of a long-tenured head coach.

CSK appoint Zaheer Khan as head coach

CSK have officially named former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for IPL 2027. He replaces Stephen Fleming, who concluded his remarkable 18-year association with the franchise to assume a new role with England cricket. Fleming was appointed England‘s men’s Test head coach in July.

Khan brings extensive expertise both on and off the field. During his playing career, the former fast bowler represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals before retiring from the league in 2017.

Transitioning from his playing days, Khan assumed various leadership and mentoring roles. He served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations ahead of the 2019 IPL season and later became the head of global development. He was also appointed as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2025, departing the franchise before the subsequent season.

Zaheer brings extensive playing and mentoring experience

Khan featured in 100 IPL matches, concluding his career with 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. His international career was equally distinguished, claiming 610 wickets across formats for India. Regarding his appointment, Khan expressed that joining one of the IPL’s most successful franchises is a great honor. He also reminisced about facing CSK during his playing years and the unique atmosphere fostered by the team’s supporters at Chepauk.

“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history,” said Zaheer in a statement.

CSK look to rebuild after difficult IPL 2026 campaign

This appointment follows a difficult IPL 2026 season for CSK. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the franchise finished outside the playoff positions, recording six victories and eight defeats from their 14 matches. A 12-point tally resulted in the team missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

With a new head coach now in place, CSK will enter IPL 2027 seeking a fresh start. Managing Director KS Viswanathan described Khan as a world-class bowler, praising his work with young fast bowlers and his contributions to India’s success during the 2000s.

The franchise hopes that Khan’s extensive coaching and mentoring background will fortify its core and guide CSK back into contention in the upcoming season.
