Kansas City has dominated the rivalry with Las Vegas in recent years, but the vastly improved Raiders—winners of just three games last season—pushed the Chiefs to the brink.
Las Vegas carried a 13-10 lead into the final quarter in a contest that featured three lead changes before Kansas City ultimately held on for a 30-27 victory.
The turning point arrived when the Chiefs’ running back erupted for two touchdowns in a span of 19 seconds, with Kansas City regaining possession immediately by forcing a fumble on the ensuing kickoff return.
The Raiders rallied to stay alive courtesy of a touchdown from their tight end, but the game ended on the final play when the Las Vegas quarterback was sacked as he threw, resulting in a game-sealing interception.
The running back finished with 177 yards on 22 carries, while a teammate added two receiving touchdowns and 111 yards through the air.
After missing the playoffs last season, the Chiefs look capable of returning to Super Bowl contention. They next face the Los Angeles Chargers, who fell to 0-4 following a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
