China’s Manned Space Program released a brief statement on Sunday concerning its highly anticipated Chang’e 7 lunar exploration mission.
The agency explained that, following a thorough evaluation, the mission does not currently satisfy the criteria for launch and thus cannot proceed within the scheduled window for this year.
The statement did not specify the reason for postponing the launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site, an offshore facility in the South China Sea. The mission comprises an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a miniature hopper, and was slated to depart aboard a Long March 5 rocket as early as Sunday. Its objective is to achieve a landing at the lunar South Pole.
Weather and launch windows
The most probable cause of the delay was Typhoon Narra, which is generating winds of approximately 45 mph—equivalent to a moderate tropical storm—and is lingering in the waters that separate Hainan Island from the mainland, where the launch complex resides.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts that the storm will remain in the region for the next two to three days, potentially bringing adverse weather to the Wenchang launch site. Consequently, Chinese forecasters likely concluded that favorable launch conditions would not be available before the current window for a polar trajectory closes.
While official sources have not confirmed details, social media discussions suggest that the next viable launch window might not open until February or March of the following year. This delay could stem from several factors, such as the need for optimal illumination at polar landing sites and the mission’s requirement to conduct a 90‑day lunar orbital reconnaissance prior to landing.
A less likely scenario involves a last‑minute technical problem with either the intricate Chang’e 7 payload or the launch vehicle. Although the Long March 5 shares the YF‑100 engine with the recently lost Long March 7A, Chinese officials have indicated that the program was on track for launch in recent days, making an engine‑related setback improbable.
