Robot dogs may eventually spearhead lunar exploration, serving as sentries for research stations, scouting for environmental hazards, and assisting astronauts in locating scientifically significant geological samples, according to a strategic blueprint from researchers developing China’s lunar base.
The proposed operational model envisions a synergy between three astronauts and a fleet of intelligent machines. In this scenario, one crew member would oversee two robotic dogs navigating the lunar terrain, while a second astronaut focuses on the collection of rock samples and the execution of precise scientific experiments.
A third crew member would operate from within a pressurized, van-sized rover, acting as the mission coordinator and managing other robotic assets as required, according to scientists from the China Academy of Space Technology, the nation’s premier spacecraft developer.
Writing in the journal Chinese Space Science and Technology in July, the authors noted that China is expanding the boundaries of human spaceflight from Earth’s orbit to the lunar surface, emphasizing that future exploration will rely on a hybrid approach of “astronaut-led decision-making and autonomous robots carrying out the work.”
Robotics will be particularly vital in the extraction of lunar resources and the preparation of the moon for permanent human habitation. This includes tasks such as harvesting water ice, mining essential minerals, converting natural lava tubes into sustainable habitats, and utilizing local materials for construction.
Beyond heavy industry, these robots would manage routine maintenance, including daily security patrols, climate and air quality regulation, sanitation, hydroponic gardening, and meal preparation. Furthermore, they are envisioned as social companions capable of interacting with astronauts to mitigate the psychological challenges associated with extreme isolation.
