China has re-entered the top 100 of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index for the first time since 2016, according to the 2026 edition of the annual report released by the Swiss-based organization.
The economy closed 69.9% of its gender gap in 2025, climbing to 96th place among 145 nations—a gain of seven positions and 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous year. The last time China ranked within the top 100 was in 2016, when it placed 99th.
In the East Asia and Pacific region, China now ranks ahead of several major economies, including South Korea (101st), Japan (117th), and India (131st).
