Thunderstorms and strong winds have caused at least 15 deaths and 275 injuries in central China, according to state media, with additional fatalities reported in southern regions due to heavy rains and flooding.
Multiple areas in Hubei province faced severe convective weather on Monday, as stated by CCTV. Cities like Huangshi and Huanggang were severely impacted, resulting in eight fatalities. Tornadoes were also reported in certain locations, with nine individuals unaccounted for.
The severe weather left 275 people injured in Huanggang’s Huangzhou district by Tuesday morning, as reported by Xinhua, without additional details on injury severity. Approximately 408 residents were relocated to secure locations.
Rescue and relief operations are currently in progress, according to Xinhua.
Severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak caused two deaths in Guangxi’s southern region and prompted the evacuation of at least 48,000 people as of Monday evening. Authorities in Nanning, Guangxi’s capital, escalated flood emergency responses to the highest level after torrential rainfall overwhelmed dams.
CCTV shared footage depicting a reservoir dam’s walls collapsing, unleashing a flood of muddy water. Homes and vehicles in nearby areas were partially submerged.
Rescue teams were observed using life vests and helmets, while others conducted searches via inflatable boats.
China’s leader, Xi Jinping, emphasized the necessity of “maximum effort” in coordinating emergency rescue, treating the injured, and relocating affected populations, as reported by state broadcasters.
Experts caution that the frequency and severity of extreme weather events will likely rise as global temperatures increase due to fossil fuel emissions.
China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, also leads in renewable energy initiatives, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
