China Signals Possible Retaliation Following US Visa Restrictions on Students and Journalists

China lashed out on Friday at “discriminatory” new US visa regulations aimed at students, journalists and other groups and warned that it reserved the right to take reciprocal countermeasures.

The announcement, made by the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday, has raised concerns among Chinese students currently in the United States and those planning to study there.

According to the new rules, which are part of the White House’s broader crackdown on both legal and illegal immigration, student and cultural exchange visas will be capped at four years.

‘The US restrictions on people‑to‑people exchanges do not benefit any party,’ foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Friday.

‘China firmly rejects the US discriminatory action targeting specific countries,’ he added, noting that China reserved the right to respond.

Stephen, a Chinese student intending to pursue a PhD in computer science in the United States, said the new regulations have left him with a difficult dilemma.
