
On September 19, Dou Xiankang, head of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, unveiled a grant package that would be the envy of young researchers anywhere. Under 35 will receive fifteen years of support, with funding doubling after five years and again after ten, and no short-term performance reviews. The only metric, Dou said, is long-term promise.
