Men early on led the market for action cameras, but a gender gap has closed as the products are embraced by a widening spectrum of creators and in everyday life, researchers say.

The China-based manufacturer Insta360, recognized for its action cameras, is accelerating its global expansion strategy this year with plans to open flagship stores in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
In New York City, specifically in Times Square, the company intends to launch its first U.S. store in the third quarter of 2023, according to Max Richter, co-founder and marketing vice president of Insta360. Richter pointed out that New York’s dense community of creators and consumers makes it an ideal location, given the existing demand for Insta360 cameras through both online retailers like Amazon and physical stores such as Best Buy.
The company is also planning to establish stores in Tokyo and Munich, positioning itself as a competitor to industry leaders GoPro and DJI. Richter noted the strategic importance of targeting cities with strong action sports and creator communities, which aligns with Insta360’s product focus.
Insta360, founded in 2015, represents a wave of Chinese companies that aim to establish a global presence from inception, contrasting with earlier Chinese firms that first built domestic dominance before venturing internationally, according to Joe Ngai, chairman of McKinsey in Greater China.
“Taken the fight to GoPro”
The evolution of Insta360 into a serious competitor to GoPro is notable for how it combines rapid Chinese market agility with advanced product development. As observed by industry analysts, the perception of Insta360’s products as top-tier action cameras transcends national origin, with consumers focusing on functionality in sports, entertainment, and professional applications.
Financial performance has been robust, with annual sales surging 74% to $1.4 billion last year. The first quarter of 2026 saw further growth, achieving 83% year-over-year revenue increases, though net profits declined to 36 million yuan due to significant investments in research and development. This financial shift has impacted its Shanghai stock listing, causing a notable drop in share value.
Technology and Market Growth
With a market projection of reaching $18 billion by 2033 according to Grand View Research, the action camera industry’s rapid expansion is driven by consumer demand for high-definition content, advancements in AI-driven stabilization, and the growing appeal of durable, weather-resistant camera designs suitable for extreme conditions.
Founded by Chinese entrepreneur Liu Jingkang (“JK”), who became a billionaire after Insta360’s Shanghai Stock Exchange listing in June 2020, the company has benefited from early-stage investments by IDG and Qiming Venture Partners.

Richter, originally from Germany, joined Insta360 in 2016 after working at rival DJI, another Shenzhen-based tech giant. He emphasized the strategic advantages of Shenzhen’s hardware development ecosystem and how his collaboration with JK Liu helped shape the company’s technological vision.
Insta360’s product ecosystem extends beyond basic cameras to include gimbal stabilization devices, appealing to a diverse customer base of sports enthusiasts, travelers, and content creators. Richter highlighted an example of a child-mounted camera video that garnered 42 million Instagram likes, illustrating the expanding appeal to family-oriented users.
“The software experience has been crucial”
Richter emphasized the importance of Insta360’s software capabilities, particularly in leveraging AI for image optimization and content creation tools that reduce technical barriers for users. This focus on integrated software solutions has helped the company attract both amateur and professional creators.
Increasing Physical Retail Presence
The move to physical stores aims to enhance consumer engagement and product education. Richter explained that the company’s products often require detailed user guidance, which can be better provided through hands-on retail experiences. Insta360 already operates through a global network of over 10,000 retail locations, including partnerships with Apple Authorized Resellers, and plans to expand its Honor-branded store presence in China to 300 locations by year-end.
Strategic Store Placement
The New York store complements Insta360’s existing Los Angeles office, with Richter noting the need to balance U.S. market coverage. Munich’s selection reflects its strong outdoor lifestyle community, while Tokyo aligns with Japan’s adventure tourism culture. The company is also strengthening resort partnerships to capitalize on growing adventure tourism markets, including in China.
The rapid development of AI in imaging technology is expanding the global pool of digital content creators. Computational imaging techniques that improve image quality with minimal user input are particularly attractive to social media users, according to Richter.
