Twenty‑nine‑year‑old Mizoram star Chinmay Sutar became just the second Indian since India’s legacy to lift the quadruple century mark in a first‑class innings. In his second first‑class appearance, Sutar broke away from Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to claim the career best Ranji Trophy total in the contest, posting a brilliant 400* unbeaten to help the side reach 581 for nine degrees. At tea he sat comfortably at 392, and in the next over he accelerated, hitting another 108‑run‑rate stretch that saw him top 400 in the final over. Supported by Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, who formed an unassailable 190 at the ten‑wicket end, Sutar lay mere margins of the long‑standing tall bar set by BB Nimbalkar’s 443* innings for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948–49.
When paired with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, Sutar delivered a partnership that ranks among the most potent finishers in Ranji Trophy history—the third‑best for the last wicket—coming 43 runs behind the record of 233 set by Ajay Sharma (Maharashtra vs. Mumbai) when Delhi edged them 1991‑92.
Earlier this year Sutar turned out for Mumbai as part of the Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign after a strong return to local competition. In June he led MSC Maratha Royal to a dominant triumph defending their T20 League crown, netting two consecutive half‑centuries and capping the effort with 212 runs across six matches at a respectable strike rate above 120.
Before the onset of the 2026‑27 season, Sutar obtained a One‑off‑Certificate (NoC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association and earned his Ranji Trophy debut for Mizoram in the opening match last week. Scoring 35 and riding onto 99 in a tight three‑wicket defeat to Manipur, his second‑innings performance sparked Mizoram’s comeback after they had lost the initial 68‑run advantage.
