Arrow McLaren driver Christian Lundgaard overcame a front wing damage on the opening lap to claim a dramatic XPEL Grand Prix triumph at Road America, navigating a chaotic race that featured multiple caution periods and late-race drama.
Starting from 13th position, the Dane methodically advanced through the field and seized the lead with four laps remaining after race leader Marcus Armstrong encountered a mechanical failure. Lundgaard then held off David Malukas in a tense final-lap shootout to secure his third career IndyCar victory and second of the 2024 season.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyffin Simpson rounded out the podium finishers, while pole-sitter Alex Palou crossed the line fourth in his #10 Honda. Will Power, despite colliding with Graham Rahal in Turn 12 during the closing laps, managed to salvage fifth place.
Race Summary
Alex Palou launched from pole position on alternate tires, with Marcus Armstrong slotting into second ahead of David Malukas. Chaos erupted early when Lundgaard made contact with Scott Dixon, damaging his front wing and forcing an unscheduled pit stop. Dixon continued but dropped to 10th.
Malukas came under pressure from Felix Rosenqvist, who ran the harder primary compound tire. By Lap 5, Palou led Armstrong by 2.8 seconds, with Malukas 5.2 seconds adrift. That margin grew to 3.6 seconds five laps later.
Rosenqvist finally overtook Malukas for third on Lap 12 as the first round of pit stops commenced. Andretti Global’s Will Power and Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing were among the early stoppers. A battle for sixth place emerged between rookie Caio Collet and Scott McLaughlin, with McLaughlin ultimately gaining the upper hand.
Palou, Armstrong, and Malukas pitted on Lap 14, switching to primary tires. Romain Grosjean’s loose left-rear wheel in Turn 5 brought out a full-course caution on the same lap. The Frenchman limped back to the pits on three wheels. Rosenqvist, who inherited the lead during the caution, executed flawless pit strategy to reclaim the top spot with fresh alternate tires.
Pit lane complications saw Scott Dixon and Santino Ferrucci penalized for pitting after the caution was declared. Rahal Letterman Lanigan rookie Mick Schumacher also received a pit speed violation penalty, dropping him to the rear of the field. After extended cleanup efforts, Rosenqvist led the restart on Lap 20, followed by Palou, Marcus Ericsson, Armstrong, Pato O’Ward, and Nolan Siegel.
Palou incurred a drive-through penalty on Lap 29 for exceeding pit lane speed limits, but a timely caution for Christian Rasmussen’s stalled ECR Chevrolet negated the setback. The ensuing stops reshuffled the field, with Armstrong leading, Malukas second, and Palou eighth.
Armstrong commanded the restart on Lap 33, with Malukas and Alexander Rossi in tow. Contact between Rosenqvist and Schumacher in the Carousel sent Rosenqvist spinning to 18th. Rossi and Simpson pitted with 14 laps remaining, while Palou’s slow stop relegated him behind Simpson exiting the pits.
Lundgaard assumed the lead after pitting with 10 laps to go, but ceded the position to Rosenqvist on cold tires. Caution flew again when Armstrong’s car began smoking, narrowing the gap to 3 seconds with five laps remaining. Mechanical issues saw Armstrong retire from the lead with three laps left, setting up a green-white-checkered finish.
Lundgaard seized the lead on the restart, with Malukas and Siegel in pursuit. Contact between Power and Rahal in Turn 12 sent Rahal into the barriers, ending the race under caution with Lundgaard unchallenged in the final lap.
