Christian Pulisic has bolstered USMNT championship hopes at the 2026 World Cup, following a series of standout group-stage performances interrupted only by a minor calf injury. Ahead of the critical Round of 32 encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pulisic has confirmed he is fully recovered and prepared to lead the attack from the start.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday prior to the team’s final training session, the American captain offered an optimistic update on his physical condition. “I felt great in the last game against Turkey. I’m feeling good this week, and I’m definitely ready to go for tomorrow,” Pulisic said, adding that he feels capable of playing the full 120 minutes should the knockout match go into extra time.
The AC Milan forward has overcome the calf discomfort that necessitated his precautionary removal during the group match against Australia. He returned to action in the final group game against Turkey, where head coach Mauricio Pochettino utilized him as a tactical substitute, bringing Pulisic on in the 58th minute to provide much-needed creativity and pace on the right wing.
In a conversation with Fox Sports, Pulisic provided a measured outlook on the challenge posed by the Bosnian side: “We’re expecting a really tough game. We saw a lot of good things from them in the group stage. We’ve seen in the knockouts so far that there hasn’t been an easy game for anyone, so we’re not expecting an easy game at all. I think it’s gonna be a good battle. We have to put on a really good performance if we want to win.“
Christian Pulisic #10 of the United States fields questions from the media during the training session.
The upcoming single-elimination match serves as a pivotal moment for the USMNT. A victory would propel them into the Round of 16 and help overcome a difficult historical trend: the United States has struggled to secure wins against European opposition on the world stage.
Currently, the Americans are on a 13-match winless streak against UEFA nations. The last time the U.S. defeated a European opponent was in March 2021 during a friendly against Northern Ireland, making this match a significant opportunity to break a long-standing drought during their home World Cup campaign.
Pulisic Eyes Historic Milestone
With medical clearance secured, Pulisic is expected to feature in Pochettino’s starting lineup. After providing a key assist in the opening match against Paraguay, the former Borussia Dortmund winger is looking to replicate his impactful performances from previous tournaments while chasing individual accolades.
Pulisic currently holds 33 goals in 88 caps for the United States. He sits just one goal away from tying Eric Wynalda (34 goals) for fourth place on the nation’s all-time men’s scoring list.
