Christopher Judge, the original voice of Kratos in the God of War reboot and its sequel Ragnarok, has disclosed his decision not to reprise the role for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video adaptation. While initially in talks to return, Judge ultimately chose to step away, citing personal and professional considerations.
The live-action series will see Dave Bautista assume the role of Kratos after Ryan Hurst—known for his portrayal of Thor in the games—had to exit due to an on-set injury. During a recent panel discussion, Judge shared his rationale, explaining that physical and mental demands led him to decline the offer. “We had talked and I thought, ‘God, what a great legacy to leave for my grandson.’ So I started working out. I got bigger,” he remarked, as reported by IGN. He further noted that his mind and body signaled reluctance: “I never had a problem with lines before, but this time it was hard to memorize. That was my mind and body telling me, ‘You don’t want to do this.’”
Judge, who starred as Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1 from age 33 to 44, emphasized his current priorities at 62: “I don’t want to live that way again. I didn’t want to, at 62 years old, work 18-hour days. I didn’t want to be dieting constantly. I didn’t want to be working out constantly.”
The next God of War game will center on Kratos’ late wife, Laufey, exploring her journey through the afterlife. Studio head Cory Barlog clarified that this narrative shift remains part of the broader universe: “While [God of War: Laufey] is a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore [with] all these different characters in there,” Barlog stated in June. “But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”
