Christopher Nolan Eyes a Potential Horror Film as His Next Directorial Venture

Christopher Nolan indicated he is open to directing a horror film for his upcoming project, citing Obsession as the kind of movie that interests him.

The Oscar‑winning filmmaker is currently riding the biggest worldwide opening weekend of his career, with The Odyssey grossing $254 million (£196 million) since its debut last Friday, July 17. This launch also marks the top live‑action opening of 2024, surpassed only by Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan laughed about fans urging him to tackle a horror picture, noting that his latest film already contains several horror‑tinged sequences. “They don’t have to beg me to tell a horror story any more—just buy a ticket,” he remarked, before discussing whether experimenting with those elements in his action epic has sparked a desire to pursue a full‑length horror film.

“It really whets my appetite for more,” he said. “I’ve always felt that horror must be handled with great care from a conceptual standpoint—you need a truly compelling idea. Take Obsession, for example; that film works brilliantly. It isn’t about the technical challenges or scratching any particular itch; it’s about the story. That’s what I keep searching for.”

Obsession has emerged as one of the year’s breakout hits. Director Curry Barker’s debut feature follows a man who wishes for his crush to fall in love with him, only to face deadly repercussions. Barker, who gained notice through short horror videos on YouTube, said he intends to turn those online projects into full‑length features.

Nolan added that, following the demanding production of The Odyssey—which he said pushed “the limits of my own stamina”—it will be at least three years before his next film arrives.
