The Chrysler Building’s Iconic Art Deco Crown Set for Restoration Following Sale Transaction
The Chrysler Building, renowned for its distinctive high-rise silhouette in Manhattan’s skyline, is slated for a substantial renovation under a lucrative sale agreement.
The monument, inaugurated nearly a century ago, will have its signature Art Deco crown meticulously restored during a comprehensive refurbishment that also targets repairs to its historic 77‑storey façade.
Developer Tishman Speyer has assumed the lease, taking over from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, a private educational institution.
Tishman Speyer and its partners will inject $235 million ($178 million) into the venture, encompassing an upgrade to the 61st floor—which houses dramatic eagle gargoyles—and the addition of a premium lounge.
Located adjoining Grand Central Station, the majority of the structure will serve commercial office purposes through a “prebuild” strategy intended to accelerate tenant occupancy.
According to Tishman Speyer, the neighborhood enjoys some of the lowest office vacancy rates in Manhattan; the developer remarked that “new office supply in the region has been virtually non‑existent for decades.”
Renovation plans comprise extensive internal upgrades, including modernizations to the building’s mechanical, elevator, electrical, and air‑handling systems.
At 1,046 feet (319 m), the landmark briefly attained status as the world’s tallest building before being overtaken by the Empire State Building less than a year later.
Initially financed by automobile magnate Walter Chrysler, ground was broken in 1928 and construction concluded in 1930.
Architect William Van Alen derived the design for the eagle gargoyles from ornamental scarves atop the city’s 1929 Chrysler automobile.
