Kevin Magnussen’s NASCAR Cup Series debut at the San Diego street course was a true initiation into the sport, characterized by a multi-lap battle with Front Row Motorsports’ Noah Gragson that escalated into a race-ending collision.
The on-track hostilities peaked halfway through the event, but the conflict began much earlier. NASCAR has released over seven minutes of onboard footage and radio communications detailing the escalating tension that led to the final crash and the subsequent post-race argument. A detailed lap-by-lap breakdown follows the footage.
Watch: Full recap of NASCAR clash between Magnussen and Gragson
Radio Exchange: Upon being informed that Magnussen’s No. 91 car was closing in, Gragson responded with a blunt, “Yeah, f*** him.” This exchange served as the prelude to the first significant contact between the two drivers.
Lap 25 Contact: While fighting for 33rd place, Magnussen attempted an inside move. Gragson defended the line, resulting in Magnussen hitting the rear of the car. As they transitioned to the straightaway side-by-side, Gragson squeezed Magnussen, forcing the Danish driver to lift.
Lap 26 Overtake Attempt: Magnussen tried again to pass under braking into Turn 2, but Gragson’s aggressive blocking once more forced Magnussen to lift. The battle continued through the next sequence of corners with Gragson maintaining a hard defensive line.
Lap 26 Pass and Retaliation: Magnussen eventually managed to lunge inside and clear Gragson entering the final chicane. However, Gragson immediately accelerated into the right-rear of Magnussen’s vehicle to reclaim the position.
Lap 30 Caution Radio: Magnussen expressed his frustration to his team: “I’m stuck behind this guy. I don’t know who he is. I bumped him, but he turned down in front of me, so he’s not exactly a thinker. I’ll clear him at some point, and then we got some good pace.”
Lap 32 Restart: Starting side-by-side, Gragson crowded Magnussen, leading to “door-slamming” contact. Shortly after, a separate accident involving the leaders brought the race back under caution.
Caution Period Friction: The race was red-flagged for wall repairs following a crash that eliminated pre-race favorite Shane van Gisbergen. Before the field came to a complete stop, Gragson maneuvered past several cars to get ahead of Magnussen, punctuating the move with a middle finger.
Red Flag Communications: Gragson complained to his team, asking, “How’s my back bumper look when the #91 just piledrove me into (Turn) 12?” When his team suggested the contact was inevitable given Magnussen’s positioning, Gragson replied, “Yeah, all these F1 d****heads just think they get fenders and a f*** bumper and they just drive in the inside and just barrel into everyone. F*** had it.”
Magnussen’s Response: Magnussen remained more composed on the radio, stating, “Yeah, he’s pretty unhappy, but I mean, what can I do. Gotta get over it at some point.” He then strategized with his team on how to pass Gragson during the pit stops to avoid further conflict: “I think if we can clear him in the pits, that would be preferred. I think he’s gonna take us out as soon as we get past him. He’s gonna bump us in the next corner.”
Caution Period Agitation: After the stoppage, Gragson continued to provoke Magnussen, bumping the rear of the No. 91 car before they slammed doors again. Gragson’s team urged him to remain smart.
Magnussen’s Reaction: When his team remarked that Gragson “is not very smart,” Magnussen replied, “Well, he’s got a race to do, so hopefully he’ll get over himself.”
Lap 34 Heavy Contact: Choosing to restart directly behind Magnussen, Gragson slammed into the back of the No. 91 car under braking in Turn 3, shoving Magnussen into the cars ahead. Trackhouse crew members noted that Gragson had “straight up punted him.” The two continued to trade paint down the straightaway and through a tight right-hander before Magnussen managed to create some separation.
Lap 37: Gragson regained the lead as the pair navigated around a spinning car without further incident.
Lap 38 Crash: Entering the sweeping Turn 4, Magnussen dove underneath Gragson. After being crowded once again, Magnussen accelerated into the right-rear of Gragson’s car. The impact sent Gragson spinning into the outside wall, ending his race. They were battling for 15th place at the time of the crash.
Gragson’s Final Radio: “Severe damage. Front toe link, front damage, steering’s off. #91 just f****** destroyed us.”
Attempt to Return: While in the garage, Gragson requested to return to the race despite the damage. Officials denied the request for safety reasons, though it appeared Gragson’s desire to return was driven more by a quest for payback than points.
Post-Race Confrontation
The tension culminated in a viral post-race confrontation where Gragson waited for Magnussen. The two exchanged heated words for approximately 90 seconds before eventually parting ways.
Driver Profiles: Gragson and Magnussen
To provide context on the personalities involved in this feud:
Noah Gragson: A veteran of nearly 130 Cup starts, Gragson currently drives for Front Row Motorsports. While he has yet to win in the Cup Series (best finish: 3rd), he is a prolific winner in the Xfinity and Truck series. Known as one of the garage’s biggest personalities, Gragson is no stranger to conflict, having been involved in several physical altercations, including a 2023 incident where Ross Chastain punched him after a race in Kansas.
Kevin Magnussen: The Danish driver spent a decade in Formula 1 with McLaren, Renault, and Haas. Known for his aggressive style, he earned a podium on his 2014 debut and a pole position in Brazil in 2022. Magnussen’s reputation for hard racing followed him to F1, where he became the first driver to face a race ban for accumulating too many penalty points. Recently, he has transitioned to sports car racing, competing in IMSA and WEC with the BMW Hypercar team, and previously made a single IndyCar appearance in 2021.
