Classic Hit ‘9 to 5’ Set for Theatrical Return with Proceeds Going to Charity

The beloved 1980 comedy featuring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin is returning to cinemas. 20th Century Studios will re-release 9 to 5 for a limited one-week theatrical run from October 9 to 15.

The film stars Parton alongside Fonda and Tomlin as office employees seeking sweet revenge against their tyrannical boss. Directed by Colin Higgins and produced by Bruce Gilbert, the screenplay was written by Higgins and Patricia Resnick.

Before her passing in late August at the age of 80, the beloved country icon shared that she and her co-stars had occasionally explored the possibility of a sequel over the years, though it never materialized, she told Huff Post. Reports in 2024 indicated that a remake was being developed under Jennifer Aniston’s production company, but subsequent updates have been scarce.

“We have no plans to be in that,” Parton stated at the time. “However, I truly hope she succeeds, as I read the script and found it to be a wonderful, fresh take that updates the office dynamic for how people live today.” She remained open to contributing original songs or reworking her iconic hit single “9 to 5” for a modern audience.

The theatrical re-release coincides with “Dolly Parton Day,” observed in California, Nashville, and other locations honoring the late icon. Under the Dollywood Foundation, September 25—known as “9 2 5”—is designated as “Give Like Dolly Day,” a global celebration aimed at supporting the Imagination Library Programs and celebrating Dolly’s legacy of inspiring children to dream big and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Ticket proceeds from the film’s screenings will directly benefit the Dollywood Foundation and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
