Clear Eyes Manufacturer Recalls 39,060 Units Due to Potential Contamination[/TITLE>

Federal safety regulators have announced a nationwide recall of nearly 40,000 bottles of eye drops due to potential contamination concerns.

Prestige Brand Holdings, headquartered in Tarrytown, New York, has voluntarily recalled 39,060 bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief eye drops. The recall was initiated due to a “lack of assurance of sterility,” as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall, which commenced on July 29 and remains ongoing, pertains to 15-milliliter bottles bearing lot code 2552A and an expiration date of September 30, 2027.

“Consumer safety is our top priority,” stated Phil Terpolilli, a company spokesman, in an email sent on Sunday.

He explained that the recall was prompted by the identification of a potential contamination risk during the manufacturing process.

Neither Mr. Terpolilli nor the FDA provided further details on the nature of the contamination.

“Although the product in question has not been confirmed as contaminated, we have initiated this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure, reflecting our commitment to ensuring consumer safety and product quality,” he stated.

Mr. Terpolilli further noted that no serious adverse events have been reported thus far, and the recall is limited to the specified product.

According to the FDA notice, the eye drops were distributed by Medtech Products Inc., a subsidiary of Prestige Consumer Healthcare.

The FDA classified the recall as Class II, defined on its website as a situation where the use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, or where the likelihood of serious health consequences is low.

The Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief product is described on its packaging as an “astringent/lubricant redness-reliever eye drop,” designed to alleviate symptoms such as redness, itching, burning, and watery eyes.

This product is available at major retailers, including Walmart and CVS.

Consumers are advised to discontinue use of the recalled product and return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

While eye drop recalls are less frequent than those related to food, they do occur periodically.

In 2023, two brands of eye drops were recalled after health agencies linked them to a drug-resistant bacteria strain associated with four deaths and serious health complications in multiple individuals.

Additionally, two other types of eye drops were recalled during the same period due to a different contamination risk.
