Colombia secured their place in the World Cup 2026 last 16 with a 1-0 victory against Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.
The South American team controlled the match but managed only a single goal from substitute Jhon Arias, setting up a tough challenge against Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Ghana’s midfielder Thomas Partey tested Colombia’s defense early with a shot that narrowly missed the target, but the African side failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
Colombia were forced to make an early substitution when Jhon Cordoba suffered an apparent groin injury and was replaced by Luis Suárez.
Ghana also had to change their lineup later when Alidu Seidu came on for the injured Marvin Senaya.
Colombia capitalized on Suárez’s persistence on the right flank, leading to an unmarked goal by Arias in the 14th minute.
This result posed a significant challenge for Ghana, who had only scored twice during the group stage.
Luis Díaz, a Bayern Munich forward, had a clear chance to extend Colombia’s lead in the 39th minute but misstrikes the ball.
Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made a crucial save from a downward header by Johan Mojica during the first-half stoppage time.
Despite Colombia’s dominance, with over 300 completed passes, Ghana remained in contention, having not faced a single shot on target.
In the second half, Colombia created multiple scoring chances but failed to convert them, securing the narrow victory.
With this win, Colombia is now favored to face Switzerland in their next match, positioning them as strong contenders for the tournament.
