Colombia Court Orders President De la Espriella to Hide Controversial Social Media Clips
A Colombian judge has ordered President Abelardo de la Espriella to conceal social media videos that appeared to show him walking among alleged criminal corpses, according to a court filing obtained by AFP on Wednesday.
De la Espriella, who took office last month, declared war on Colombia’s extensive network of drug‑trafficking guerrilla groups, a strategy supported by U.S. military assistance.
The Colombian armed forces have subsequently executed three bombing raids that killed at least 42 people, including six minors, in the Amazon region and along the border with Venezuela.
De la Espriella faced criticism after publishing several graphic videos on the head of the government’s official Instagram account this month, in which he was depicted moving among bodies sealed in white plastic bags.
A Bogotá court accepted a request from a Green Party lawmaker asking for the removal of the videos from social media platforms.
The judicial body provisionally mandated the “concealment of the posts…while a final verdict remains pending,” clarifying that the action does not amount to a permanent deletion.
