INDIANAPOLIS — Colts receiver Josh Downs will take his usual role on Sunday against visiting Jacksonville Jaguars, according to coach Shane Steichen.

Earlier this week, Downs asked for a trade amid sweeping changes within the Colts organization. General manager Chris Ballard was dismissed on October 19, and veteran players Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner were sent to the Seahawks and 49ers, respectively.

When asked if he wanted to stay in Indianapolis, Downs replied, “I’m here right now. I’m where my feet are. We’ve got the Jags this weekend, and so I’m in the game plan. So I’ve got to be ready to go.”

Steichen said he spoke with Downs recently, urging him to concentrate on the present.

Steichen recalled, “Hey, you’re a professional. Obviously, you requested a trade, but you’re on this football team and you have to show up. We need to play a game on Sunday.”

Regarding Downs’ practice performance this week, Steichen noted, “He’s a professional. He practiced this week and is ready to go. We expect him to be at his best on Sunday.”

Downs leads the team with 307 receiving yards this season, a role that has expanded after the loss of top receiver Alec Pierce. The Colts have also been without star tight end Tyler Warren over the past two games, further straining the passing attack.

Consequently, defenses have paid heightened attention to Downs, whose performance has been inconsistent and whose career catch rate stands at a low 56.5%.

Downs is in the final year of his rookie contract. Reports indicate that other teams have expressed interest in acquiring him, though it is uncertain whether Indianapolis will agree to a trade.

Downs added, “I’m open to whatever. Whatever comes my way, comes my way.”
