The Columbus Blue Jackets needed positive news, and they finally delivered it on Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Jackets and Adam Fantilli have finalized a 6-year, $82.5 million agreement, securing the forward’s future with the franchise through the 2031-32 season. The $13.75 million average annual value represents the highest AAV in the team’s history.
This agreement comes after Fantilli skipped the first week of training camp. Despite widespread expectations that a deal would be reached sooner, both parties remained divided on the financial terms and contract length until the final 24 to 48 hours.
Fantilli now has roughly one week, potentially including a preseason game, to prepare for the Blue Jackets’ season opener against the Buffalo Sabres on October 1st.
Ultimately, the Blue Jackets had to meet Fantilli’s demands. This contract also indicates that the spotlight will be on him to elevate his performance.
A Done Deal
Here is what GM Don Waddell stated once the agreement was announced.
“Adam Fantilli possesses all the qualities you look for in a player – speed, size, and skill – alongside a competitive drive to succeed. He is one of the most exciting young players in the NHL and a significant part of what we are building in Columbus, making this a very exciting day for our organization and our fans.”

As it turned out, the Cutter Gauthier deal in Anaheim provided a blueprint for the Fantilli agreement. Gauthier secured six years and $81 million from the Ducks following a 40-goal season.
Fantilli’s leverage stemmed from his vital importance to the Blue Jackets. He is the team’s top center of the future. While the Leo Carlsson offer sheet influenced these negotiations, it was the contracts of Gauthier and Connor Bedard that set the foundation for this deal.
The agreement also secures two of Fantilli’s UFA years. Contract length was always a priority for the Blue Jackets. To convince him to sign for six years, the financial terms had to align. Ultimately, the franchise reached that threshold.
Our Instant Reaction
This transaction needed to be finalized immediately. Training camp and the preseason were already brief. Having this extend into the regular season would have benefited no one.
This deal also highlights the Blue Jackets’ commitment and belief in Fantilli. Despite scoring 24 goals and 59 points last season, he posted a career-low shooting percentage. His two-way play is improving and must continue to rise at a strong pace over the next six years to justify the contract.
The agreement also signals future stability amid some current uncertainties. With Fantilli secured, the next decisions involve Kirill Marchenko’s and Zach Werenski’s futures. If the team can navigate these situations, the outlook at Nationwide Arena suddenly looks much brighter after a chaotic offseason.
Fantilli has consistently expressed his love for and desire to be a Blue Jacket. Thursday’s deal confirms that. The next steps are now on him to help elevate the team.
Under the current market conditions, Fantilli received a fair contract. He can now focus on the crucial task of helping his team win as many games as possible.
For Waddell, the next priority is potential moves. Will LTIR be utilized? Do they want to add another player before the season? The Blue Jackets needed to finalize this deal to understand what they had to work with.
Finally, Fantilli is signed. For everyone involved with the Blue Jackets, this is a moment worth celebrating. It is also a massive sigh of relief that the process did not drag on any longer than it already did.
