Carlos Mencia, the comedian who created and hosted Comedy Central’s Mind of Mencia in the early 2000s, was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with twelve felony counts of tax evasion. Mencia, whose real name is Ned Arnel Holness, is accused of two separate sets of offenses: six counts of failing to file personal income taxes with intent to evade tax, and six counts of failing to file corporate income taxes with the same intent.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges, alleging that Mencia omitted reporting $8.7 million in income—both personal and corporate—spanning the tax years 2019 through 2024. According to the filing, the comedian owes the state of California more than $300,000 in unpaid taxes, broken down into roughly $267,594 in personal income taxes and $35,117 in corporate income taxes. His arraignment is scheduled for June 22, and bail has been set at $250,000.
“Mr. Mencia enjoys an income that most people can only imagine, and like everyone else he is obligated to file his tax returns and pay his fair share,” Hochman said in a statement. “Failing to report millions of dollars in income is an affront to the hard‑working residents of Los Angeles County who file and pay their taxes each year. We are sending a clear message that tax evasion will no longer be tolerated in our community.”
If convicted on all counts, Mencia could face a maximum prison term of 11 years and 4 months in state prison.
