Although the primary aim for every participant at the World Cup is to claim the championship, individual honors add further distinction, recognizing the tournament’s standout talents. The Golden Ball honors the player adjudged the best overall, a designation determined by media voters selected from a shortlist curated by FIFA’s Technical Study Group.
The list of laureates constitutes an illustrious assembly of talent, even though some all‑time greats such as Pelé never received the award. This omission has no bearing on his performances, as the Golden Ball was introduced only in 1982. Moreover, unlike many individual accolades, the competitors who finish second and third in the vote also receive the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively.
Throughout history, many of soccer’s most eminent players have secured the Golden Ball, with Lionel Messi uniquely holding the record for two victories. Goalkeepers, too, can be honored with a dedicated accolade—the Golden Glove—while remaining eligible for the Golden Ball itself. Notably, Oliver Kahn stands alone as the only goalkeeper to have been crowned tournament MVP, achieving this in 2002.
