Benn Slumps Under Garcia’s Quick Exit Highlights Weightshift Plans
Last month, Conor Benn struggled to capture the WBC welterweight title, being stopped inside two rounds by defending champion Ryan Garcia.
Garcia launched a thunderous right hand that ended Benn’s effort in the second round, forcing a split decision stoppage with referee Thomas Taylor and earning Garcia his first professional world title defense.
In the ensuing weeks, analysts, fans, and commentators have questioned Benn’s competitive level, noting that he may have been operating several divisions above his current rank and urged him to focus on the British championship before pursuing world majors.
During an interview on Seconds Out, Benn dismissed claims that he had been outclassed, stating he merely needed to recuperate and return to form soon.
“If you go swimming, you get wet, you pay the price. No problem, you bounce back. It’s life, it happens.”
When pressed about the rapid conclusion, Benn acknowledged difficulties attaining the 147‑pound cut after previously fighting up to the middleweight division (160 lb) the previous year.
“I can’t fight at the weight, I can’t make the weight.”
Benn has confirmed his intention to transition to either middleweight or super‑middleweight in upcoming bouts, sparking speculation about a potential 2027 rematch against Chris Eubank Jr. at 168 pounds.
Benn’s manager Keith Connolly outlined a tentative strategy to target a middleweight opponent to regain winning momentum before re‑engaging with former rival Chris Eubank Jr.
Regardless of his path forward, Connor Benn is slated to sit out a period post‑fighting this successful yet tumultuous two‑year campaign, which featured multiple marquee matches.
