Antonio Conte has downplayed rumors of an imminent return to management, despite increasing speculation linking him to the Manchester United position.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has been without a club since departing Napoli in the summer and remains one of the most prominent names available in the market.
United have frequently been cited as a potential destination should INEOS choose to part ways with Michael Carrick, though Conte shows no urgency to return to coaching duties.
Conte Embracing Break Despite Manchester United Interest
According to Football Italia, Conte is currently taking time away from the sport and indicated plans to fully enjoy his sabbatical.
In a video message delivered at the Festival dello Sport in Trento, Conte stated:
“I’m still enjoying my vacation, especially since I have the chance to rest and recharge this year.”
This sentiment carries weight given recent links between Conte and United.
Football Italia earlier reported that Conte is considered among the frontrunners to succeed Carrick if the club decides a change becomes necessary. Juventus have also been associated with rehiring their former manager, although the Serie A team has publicly expressed support for Luciano Spalletti.
Meanwhile, Conte departed Napoli following two seasons during which he secured the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana, further solidifying his reputation as a coach capable of delivering immediate results.
Conte Would Represent Bold Gamble for United, Not Immediate Fix
Conte naturally emerges as a compelling candidate linked with the Manchester United vacancy. A proven winner of league titles in both England and Italy, he possesses deep familiarity with the Premier League and would bring significantly more managerial experience than many other available candidates.
However, this alone doesn’t guarantee he’s the ideal appointment.
United are aiming to establish a more sustainable model, and Conte has never hesitated to publicly challenge club leadership when he believes the squad lacks quality.
This approach could prove precisely what United require—or it might generate additional friction within the organization.
Crucially, Carrick has yet to be dismissed. Football365 noted that INEOS continues to express confidence in the manager despite a challenging start to the campaign, rendering current discussions about Conte purely speculative.
Nevertheless, should United’s performance fail to improve, Conte’s continued availability will become increasingly hard to overlook.
His latest remarks suggest he’s content to remain patient—a stance that could paradoxically enhance his appeal as a realistic option if the Old Trafford position becomes open later in the season.
