Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Misuse of Donations at India’s Ram Temple
Amid a growing political firestorm, allegations of embezzlement involving millions of rupees in donations to India’s revered Ram temple have sparked public outrage and judicial scrutiny.
Located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh—a city steeped in history and once a site of communal unrest—the temple complex replaced a 16th-century mosque demolished in 1992, triggering nationwide riots that claimed nearly 2,000 lives. Since its inauguration in January 2024, the sprawling three-storey structure has emerged as a pivotal spiritual and cultural hub, drawing over 50 million annual pilgrims.
Constructed across 2.7 acres, the site includes six smaller temples and accommodates 70,000 to 80,000 devotees daily, with numbers surging to triple during festivals and weekends. Donations, collected through approximately 35 barrels positioned across the premises, have become a focal point amid the controversy.
