Coulthard Urges FIA to Prioritize Entertainment Over Safety Car Protocols Following Silverstone Finale]

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has called on the FIA to emphasize entertainment value after the British Grand Prix concluded under cautious safety car conditions.

Charles Leclerc claimed his first victory at the historic Silverstone circuit, delivering Ferrari its 250th grand prix win. However, the race lacked a dramatic finale when a late accident involving Max Verstappen deployed the safety car with no opportunity for a green-flag conclusion.

Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard, a 13-time Grand Prix winner, advocated for regulatory flexibility to enhance spectacle. Regarding the race’s conclusion behind the safety car, he stated: “I would prefer not. Yes, there are rules and regulations, but we’re entertainment, and we should really try and keep that as a focal point.”

Coulthard acknowledged the constraints imposed by Article B5.13.5, which mandates one full lap following the unlapping procedure, but suggested procedural efficiencies. “Once the safety car is out, the cars are neutralized,” he explained. “By the time it picks up the leader, no one’s overtaking. It could be expedited quickly.”

While recognizing the pressure on the FIA race director, Coulthard emphasized the sport must adapt. “We live and we learn. It was disappointing not to finish with a one-lap sprint. That would have been far better than simply running to the line.”

The FIA subsequently confirmed post-race that the safety car remained until the checkered flag due to regulatory requirements, noting that Article B5.13.5 was properly followed. Additionally, the organization revealed that the premature “Safety Car In This Lap” message displayed was attributed to a software malfunction.
