Despite entering with a combined 4-8 record, the NFC East showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles delivered strong ratings.

ESPN reported that 18.8 million viewers watched the Week 7 Monday night game between Dallas and Philadelphia.

Continuing a recent trend, more than one million viewers tuned into alternative broadcasts on ESPN2 and NFL Network, though ESPN did not specify audience figures for the ManningCast or the Next Gen Stats production.

The NFL broadcast competed with Game 3 of the World Series on Fox. Fox has yet to announce viewership numbers for Game 3; historically, network silence suggests unremarkable results.

Games 1 and 2 of the World Series, aired on Friday and Saturday, drew 12.259 million and 10.854 million viewers, respectively.

Historically, the NFL avoided head-to-head competition with the World Series. In the late 1970s, the league moved a conflicting Monday night game to the prior Thursday, and through 2009 it steered clear of the first Sunday night of the Fall Classic.

That changed in 2010, when the NFL asserted scheduling dominance by moving World Series Games 1 and 2 to Friday and Saturday. For baseball, the wisest approach would be to avoid Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays when setting the World Series calendar.
