In Copenhagen, the international future of Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo remained uncertain after the 41-year-old departed from the national team’s training camp upon learning he would not be selected to start in the upcoming match against Denmark.
Ronaldo announced late Wednesday that he had left the squad, shortly after a press conference where coach Jorge Jesus confirmed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would be omitted from the starting lineup for a second consecutive Nations League fixture.
In his absence, Portugal dominated the game, securing a 4-2 victory over Denmark.
Originally slated to train with his teammates at Parken Stadium on Wednesday evening, Ronaldo withdrew after Jesus’s announcement.
Speaking on Instagram, Ronaldo explained, “Following the national team coach’s press conference and after speaking with the Portuguese Football Federation president, I chose to leave the training camp.” He had spent Sunday’s 2-1 Nations League win in Norway on the bench, having previously captained Portugal to a 1-0 home victory over Wales on Thursday.
Ronaldo implied deeper motivations behind Jesus’s decision and hinted at a potential exit from the national team after more than two decades of service.
“Eventually, I will reveal the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been devoted,” he said. “Now I wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
Spanish outlet Marca reported that Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença followed Ronaldo to Copenhagen Airport in an attempt to persuade him to stay, before he boarded his private jet.
Jesus stressed on Wednesday that there was no rift between him and Ronaldo, though the 72-year-old, appointed in July, admitted the captain’s disappointment at remaining on the bench during the Norway match.
The incident sparked a wave of memes on social media and a furious response from Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, who criticized the Portuguese public on Instagram: “They don’t deserve the best of anything. We are envious, scornful, and ignorant, and we deserve to return to the mediocrity that defined us in the pre‑CR7 era of football,” she added, using his nickname.
The Oslo match marked the first occasion since November 2024 that Ronaldo has not featured for Portugal while not being injured or suspended.
Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi club Al‑Nassr, asserted after the match, “There was no incident whatsoever.” He added, “Any player — and I was a player myself — when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don’t get on, no one is happy about that.” He also said he had informed Ronaldo before the game that he might be used as a substitute.
“Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It’s nothing to make a fuss about,” Jesus insisted.
After Thursday’s win, Jesus’s press conference was dominated by questions about Ronaldo. “Portugal scored four goals and delivered a performance of a very high standard,” he said. “This is more important than anything else that has happened. There are players with status; that much is crystal clear. The rules are the same for everyone.”
Reports indicated that Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro discussed Ronaldo’s involvement with the coach earlier that day. Jesus noted that for the Denmark match he intended to start AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos, who scored the winning goal in Norway, adding, “If I need him, he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t.”
Ronaldo recently stated that this would probably be his final year in football. He remains Portugal’s leading goalscorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances and is the nation’s most capped player. He made his international debut at age 18 in 2003, featured in the Euro 2004 final, reached the 2006 World Cup semi‑finals, and captained Portugal to Euro 2016 glory before Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the 2022 World Cup round of 16.
