Critical Alert: China’s Impact on America’s Senior Population via Pharmaceutical Supply Chains
China’s influence on older Americans is escalating through financial deception and data privacy risks, according to a congressional hearing. Lawmakers and witnesses emphasized the gravity of this issue, framing it as a significant national security challenge. Rick Scott, a Republican senator from Florida, stressed the need to address the situation urgently. The hearing, titled “Counting the Cost: Communist China’s Toll on Older Americans’ Health, Finances and Security,” highlighted the country’s dominance in pharmaceutical ingredients and its control over global supply chains. Chris Slevin from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission noted that China’s strategic goal of securing supply chains is well-defined. Concerns have risen about America’s growing dependency on Chinese manufacturers of active pharmaceutical ingredients, potentially putting seniors at risk. A coalition report underscored the extent of potential vulnerabilities. California residents face heightened concerns as these developments unfold.
“China’s weaponisation of supply chains is not theoretical. China has made controlling global supply chains an explicit strategic goal,” said Chris Slevin, from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC).
