CSK CEO Dismisses Rumours of MS Dhoni Seeking Ownership Stake as Baseless

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan has firmly rejected recent speculation claiming that MS Dhoni sought a significant ownership stake in the IPL franchise, calling the rumors “completely baseless.”

The remarks come in response to reports from Cricblogger suggesting that the former India captain had engaged in talks with CSK management regarding acquiring a stake in the team.

According to the reports, Dhoni initially proposed acquiring up to 25 percent ownership, with the amount reportedly adjusted during negotiations. It was also claimed that CSK were open to offering a smaller equity stake, though no official confirmation was provided by either party.

CSK CEO Quashes Stake Rumours

Viswanathan addressed the speculation directly in an interview with PTI, stating unequivocally: “The rumours are completely baseless.”

His comments follow mounting speculation about Dhoni’s future with the five-time IPL champions, particularly after he missed the entirety of the 2026 season due to injury.

Dhoni, who has been a central figure at CSK since the IPL’s inception in 2008, was retained by the franchise before the 2025 mega auction but ultimately did not feature in any matches during IPL 2026.

The alleged ownership discussions have further fueled uncertainty surrounding the relationship between Dhoni and the franchise, especially as CSK undergoes major transitions, including the recent exit of head coach Stephen Fleming.

A consistent presence for Chennai Super Kings since 2008, Dhoni has steered the team to five IPL titles and remains associated with the franchise, though he has since handed over captaincy duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad. With the 2027 season approaching, Dhoni’s playing future remains unclear, with speculation suggesting he may consider retirement.
