Cubs Comeback Shuts Down Cardinals 6-4, Avoid Series Sweep]

CHICAGO (AP) — Nico Hoerner drove in two runs and Pete Crow-Armstrong recorded two hits as the Chicago Cubs mounted a four-run sixth inning against a sloppy St. Louis defense to secure a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday and avoid a series sweep.

Alex Bregman contributed a two-run double while pinch-hitter Pedro Ramirez drove in the go-ahead run, helping the Cubs finish with 10 wins in their last 13 games.

Jordan Walker hit his 20th homer, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, and added an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth for St. Louis. Rookies JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson each collected two hits for the Cardinals.

The deficit was tied at 3 following Walker’s deep left-field homer before Chicago capitalized on two Cardinals errors in the sixth. Hoerner’s RBI single off Matthew Liberatore made it 3-3, and the inning deteriorated from there for St. Louis.

Michael Busch scored to make it 4-3 when third baseman José Fermin misfielded Dansby Swanson’s double-play grounder into right field. Hoerner then crossed home on Ramirez’s sacrifice fly to center field, and Swanson added another run on a wide throw to third by Walker that skipped past the base for a 6-3 lead.

Drew Pomeranz earned his first win with the Cubs since rejoining the team Friday, pitching one inning of relief. Jacob Webb notched his third save by closing out the final two innings.

Javier Assad started strongly for Chicago, allowing no earned runs across 4⅔ innings with two singles, two walks and two strikeouts. Liberatore surrendered four earned runs on four hits over five-plus frames while navigating two walks, three hit batsmen and two strikeouts before being relieved by Matt Svanson.

The Cubs opened scoring with a 2-0 lead in the first on Bregman’s double and Hoerner’s sacrifice fly.
