I have a soft spot for period dramas, so discovering My Brilliant Career on Netflix was a genuine delight. Set in early 1900s Australia, the six-part series centers on a headstrong teenager determined to become a writer despite her family’s financial ruin, which pressures her into a advantageous marriage. Beyond a compelling love triangle, the show deftly explores themes of race and sexuality while maintaining a surprisingly sharp wit — I breezed through three episodes in a single evening, laughing aloud more than once. While some critics dismiss it as frenetic or silly, that very energy is precisely what makes it so engaging.
This month also brought an end to a persistent reading slump. After repeatedly starting and abandoning novels, an advance copy of Switzy, Emma Cline’s forthcoming novel (out September 8) about a retired executive grappling with dementia, completely captivated me. I find myself reading entire passages aloud; it is simply stunning. We are currently planning an interview with the author, and I revisited a relevant conversation from our archives in the meantime.
On the style front, I am currently gravitating toward leopard print — specifically this effortless dress. A few more pieces currently catching my eye: a cozy sweater, a printed scarf, and a great pair of shoes.
With the teenagers now preparing their own breakfasts and snacks, heading into September means stocking the kitchen with healthy options they will actually eat. Lately, I have become a devotee of Thrive Market. The membership-based online grocer delivers everything from snacks and cereals to pantry staples and cleaning supplies without the typical supermarket markup. As someone who dreads grocery shopping, having it all delivered to the doorstep feels like a small miracle. New members receive $60 off their first three orders plus a free gift.
Speaking of snacks, Anton and I recently whipped up fresh watermelon juice — simple, hydrating, and perfect for the late summer heat.
