Set in early 1900s Australia, the six-part series centers on a headstrong teenager determined to become a writer despite her family’s financial ruin, which pressures her into a advantageous marriage. Beyond a compelling love triangle, the show deftly explores themes of race and sexuality while maintaining a surprisingly sharp wit — I breezed through three episodes in a single evening, laughing aloud more than once. While some critics dismiss it as frenetic or silly, that very energy is precisely what makes it so engaging.

After repeatedly starting and abandoning novels, an advance copy of Switzy, Emma Cline’s forthcoming novel (out September 8) about a retired executive grappling with dementia, completely captivated me.
