Czech Authorities Detain Russian Orthodox Bishop in Drug Investigation]
Czech police detained Orthodox Bishop Hilarion following the discovery of four containers containing a suspicious white substance in his vehicle.
The cleric was Taken into custody in Karlovy Vary, western Bohemia, after being pulled over on a highway between Karlovy Vary and Prague on Sunday evening, according to his defense team’s statement distributed via Telegram on Monday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry swiftly condemned the arrest as a “provocation” aimed at discrediting the cleric, despite Prague’s recent shift toward reduced support for Ukraine since a new populist government took office six months ago.
Bishop Hilarion, 60, whose secular name is Grigory Alfeyev, leads the Russian Orthodox congregation in Karlovy Vary, a town home to a significant Russian-speaking community.
Hilarion has denied any involvement in drug trafficking, telling his legal team that he has “no connection and has never had any connection to the illegal trafficking of narcotic substances.”
Czech authorities confirmed only that a man was detained Sunday evening but provided no details about his identity or the specific charges, though the Drug Enforcement Centre indicated the arrest followed an anonymous tip about suspected narcotics transport.
Defense attorneys claim the stop appeared orchestrated, noting that two patrol vehicles allegedly waited along the roadway. They further allege Hilarion was not permitted to observe the search of his vehicle.
The defense is calling for independent forensic examination of the seized material, including fingerprint and DNA testing.
Russian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, denounced the detention as an orchestrated provocation intended to tarnish Hilarion’s reputation. Zakharova announced that Moscow would lodge a formal protest with Czech diplomatic authorities.
Russian media have reported that Hilarion had faced escalating threats over recent months, allegedly from individuals pressuring him to vacate his position in Karlovy Vary.
Previously viewed as a close aide to Patriarch Kirill, the spiritual leader of the Russian Orthodox Church and a key supporter of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, Hilarion reportedly fell from favor in Moscow and was reassigned abroad in 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Following allegations against him, Hilarion was reassigned to the Czech Republic. He once faced accusations from a former aide of sexual misconduct, which he denied, asserting the aide sought to extort €384,000 from him.
In contrast to many senior Russian clergy who have publicly endorsed the Ukraine conflict, Hilarion has never issued public statements regarding the war.
On the same day as the arrest, the Czech government—a coalition of populist and right-wing parties that assumed power in December—approved legislative changes tightening regulations governing the duration and financial support for Ukrainian refugees, citing concerns over abuse of assistance programs and disproportionate benefits compared to local citizens.
