Damascus Cafe Bombing Leaves 6 Dead, 22 Injured Near Government Palace]
A bomb blast at a cafe in Damascus on Thursday killed six people and wounded 22 others, Syrian authorities said, dealing another blow to the country’s Islamist leaders who are working to restore stability following more than a decade of conflict.
The attack, which authorities identified as an explosive device planted in the location, was the deadliest since a suicide bombing targeting a church last year.
It occurred near the capital’s Palace of Justice, a major government building, triggering chaotic scenes in the busy area. Ambulances rushed through traffic with sirens wailing toward the site, while security forces established a perimeter around the blast location.
Nour Khayyat, 40, who operates a nearby shop selling solar panel batteries, described hearing “a powerful blast and feeling the storefront shake” from approximately 3pm.
