Danish director May el-Toukhy’s post-war drama Woman Unknown secured the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, with lead actress Mathilde Arcel also receiving the Best Actress award in a rare dual victory.
El-Toukhy was the sole female director among the 21 films in the main competition, a disparity that sparked criticism during the festival and renewed discussions about the challenges women face in the film industry.
The narrative centers on a housemaid portrayed by Arcel, whose past relationship with a German soldier jeopardizes her future, set against the backdrop of liberated Denmark where women accused of fraternizing with occupiers faced societal backlash.
In her acceptance speech, el-Toukhy emphasized that Woman Unknown explores the female body as a contested space and highlights the stories of women deemed invisible and voiceless.
South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong won the Silver Lion for Possible Love, while Russian-born filmmaker Ilya Khrzhanovsky took Best Director for DAU, a project filmed largely in Ukraine before the ongoing conflict, which has drawn significant attention and controversy.
