Danny Boyle Backs Jack O’Connell for His Next James Bond Introduction
Danny Boyle has backed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple star Jack O’Connell as the next James Bond.
The search for a successor to 007 officially kicked off in May, assembling a slate of candidates linked to Daniel Craig’s final mission; the last attempt, No Time To die, concluded in 2021.
Reports indicate that Tom Holland cannot pursue the role due to a Marvel contract, while Taron Egerton also withdrew. Callum Turner evaded interviews about his possible involvement, and Gary Oldman endorsed Jack Lowden—known from Slow Horses—as the prospective 007.
Author Charlie Higson described recent observations, noting that Jacob Elordi was judged “too tall” for the part and warning that Jack Lowden would appear implausible. “With Daniel Craig you can believe him kicking the shit out of someone, and you must credit Bond as well.”
At the Zurich Film Festival, Boyle announced his enthusiasm for casting Jack O’Connell after they collaborated on Ink. He added, “They should cast him as James Bond” (via Variety).
“I thought he should play Larry Lamb [in Ink] because he’s weird. Despite the fact that he’s playing a monster, you’re still interested in him. You’re still intrigued by him and he doesn’t repel you,” Boyle explained. “It’s like Al Pacino at the end of The Godfather Part II> when he orders his brother’s murder—you’re still drawn to him simply staying alone.”
Boyle also elaborated on his earlier work on Ink and reiterated his preference for Jack O’Connell. “When they asked me to do Bond, we crafted a story with John Hodge and lost confidence in it. It’s a shame, because it could have been really good.”
Looking ahead, Boyle expressed excitement about Denis Villeneuve’s direction, stating, “Villeneuve is amazing. The opening of Dune: Part Three left many questioning expectations, but I’m confident his vision will elevate the series.”
Producer Amy Pascal confirmed that the next 007 will be locked down by year’s end, adding, “We’re being highly selective. A refreshingly different angle is essential, especially after Daniel Craig.”
