Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, has been officially appointed to temporarily serve in his seat following his death from an aortic dissection caused by cardiovascular disease.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Nordone’s appointment on Monday, describing her as Graham’s “beloved sister” who would “continue his legacy and fulfill his unfinished duties.” Graham, who remained unmarried and childless, had maintained a close bond with Nordone throughout his life.
“This is an immense honor. Lindsey has always been my greatest support, and now I will carry forward his mission,” Nordone stated. The appointment follows calls from officials, including former President Donald Trump, to recognize Graham’s legacy through his family’s continued service.
Nordone, who was legally adopted by Graham after their parents died within 15 months of each other when she was 13 and he was 22, will serve the remainder of his term until 2027. Graham, a prominent Republican figure, had been campaigning for re-election after securing the party’s nomination.
Known for his advocacy and legal career, Graham had previously expressed that Nordone would serve as his “first lady” if he ever pursued the presidency. She has worked extensively in job placement services for individuals with disabilities and has not yet issued a public statement regarding his passing.
